Healthy Lifestyle in The Dog Days of Summer

Don’t let your healthy lifestyle take a vacation… along with you.

Is your healthy lifestyle melting away during the summer? Summer time, is supposed to be a time of physical activity and fun. However, more often than not I’ve seen the dog days of summer lead to complacency, especially in August. August has been a pivotal month for most people trying to hold on to a healthy lifestyle routine. Most people tend to go into a wait and see mode that often goes like this, “I’ll wait for the New Year, or the beginning of Beach Season or the Fall to kick in before I get back into gear”. It’s often a difficult mindset to deal with, not only for me keeping clients on track, but especially for them when it comes to their commitment to live a healthy lifestyle and setting new goals.

Remember: It’s easier to stay in shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle balance than it is to get back in shape and start all over again.

Remember: Fitness and lifestyle changes are a year-round commitment that you can take with you wherever you go.

Have Fun!

Vacation’s during the summer, along with business trips throughout the year are the biggest culprits for falling off the wagon. However, as the great Jedi Master Yoda said, “Mind what you have learned”. I can’t think of more sage advice. Here’s the opportunity to have fun! Activities that you may not have been able to do physically in the past, may surprise you know. By staying fit and active you’re no longer a weekend or week-long warrior beating yourself up while taking 3 days to recover.

Keep healthy lifestyle goals in mind!

I know, Bar B Queues on the balcony overlooking the beach, multiple cocktails at sunset and overall too much of a good thing may feel like a good thing at the time… until you get home. Have a good time, but keep a healthy balance. Whenever I go on vacation, which unfortunately is not enough, I’m looking for activity. It’s my chance to be a kid again. After a long walk or run, a great bike ride or hike, a swim in the ocean or pool, you may have second thoughts of downing the extra cheeseburger at dinner, devouring two funnel cakes or ingesting the super sized soft ice cream cone. It’s not only a winning mindset that will keep you on track, it’s a mindset that will jump-start you when you get back home.

Plan it and Play

Take a vacation that focuses on activity like backpacking, golf or hiking. If you’re more adventurous try white water rafting or diving. Pick a hotel with a fitness facility, a pool or spa. Ask about activities that can include your kids. When packing put workout gear near the top of the list. Whether its hitting the beach, a mountain lake, a weekend getaway or a business trip, fit in physical activity and make it fun. Walk, explore, try new activities you’ve never done before. You’ll get a great workout while being adventurous at the same time. You’ll not only be taking great memories back, you’ll also be taking a healthier body! For business travelers, walk to restaurants, take the stairs instead of the elevator. If there’s no fitness facility, fire off some push ups in your room. Take breaks for short walks. At airports, walk the terminal and plan ahead to make sure you have healthy choices when it comes to snacks and meals.
